About
The expressive range of jazz, the energy and directness of rock and electronic music, and the color of music from the Middle East, all come together in a trio built around pianist and keyboardist Sharon Mansour. The trio, which includes bassist David Michaeli (Trouble) and drummer Aviv Cohen (Yemen Blues, Avishai Cohen, Big Business), is set to release its debut album this coming June on the important German label ACT.
Sharon plays with Middle Eastern rock and pop ensembles on large stages, in collaborations with artists such as Yossi Fine, Ben Aylon, The Jerusalem East West Orchestra, Lala Tamar, Orphaned Land, and others. She also regularly performs as a DJ and keyboardist with her own original electronic music, and produces melodic and meditative piano solo sets.
With her new trio, Sharon has internalized all these influences in an inspiring way, distilled them, and uses the jazz trio format to bring out the widest possible range. From cinematic and atmospheric pieces to sweeping rock-infused bursts of keyboard playing, they bring Middle Eastern-influenced melodic lines that transcend the Western limitations of half-tones. For Sharon, like many musicians of her generation, jazz is first and foremost a state of mind, a concept that opens up spaces for new and unfamiliar music, free of boundaries. A space in which the listener can wander with joy and wonder.
